Classified Advertising is a type of advertising mostly seen in newspapers, on the internet, and periodicals. Unlike conventional advertising done by only companies and businesses, classifieds allow anyone from individuals to small groups to advertise. This means that anyone offering an item or some service for sale like a car, beanbag or even a massage can advertise in the classifieds. In some cases, classifieds are even used to look for prospective spouses.

Since conventional advertising via print media has always been very expensive, newspapers developed a cheaper way to advertise in the form of Classifieds. Classified ads do not cost much, as they are usually only a few lines of text and do not take up much space. Space is not wasted on pictures or other graphics, and abbreviations are used to bring down costs. Usually, a classified add contains only the name of the item on sale, and contact details for more information.

These ads are called “classifieds”, because they are usually grouped together, under different categories (classified) based on the product or service they offer. A typical classified page would list jobs, clothes, machines, cars and a myriad of other products all under different headings to make browsing through them easy. Classified ads usually occupy a certain place in the newspaper, and a few pages are devoted to classified ads, making them convenient to locate.

On the other hand, some newspapers are devoted exclusively to printing classifieds, and are usually free. These kind of free classified ads are a great medium to advertise, and are catching on in popularity, from the humble Penny Saver to thousands of free classified ads found online nowadays.

The advent of the internet age has made free advertising rather easy, and there is no dearth of options available online to advertise. Since internet ads are not priced based on how long they are, they tend to be a little longer and more informative than their more traditional counterparts. Advertising online greatly increases exposure and brings a wider scope for an audience. Because of its low investment requirements, websites like Craigslist and Gumtree have quickly expanded into vast online directories for free classified ads on an international scale, and can bring in over 10 million visitors a month searching for purchases on their websites. Updating such a site though, requires a lot of work, and aggregators (collectors) like Trovit and Sumavisos help compile classified ads.

As more and more people tend to list their products on the internet, newspapers and other print media is rapidly losing their market share for free classified ads, as the internet is far easier to search for what you are looking for. Most websites come with a search engine, designed to help you sift through any category of item you are looking for. This internet age is also witnessing the growth of social and matrimonial classified ads. There is no better medium than the internet for putting up a free classified ad because of their efficient searches and also the amount of details offered.
