Engaging yourself in crafts is a worthwhile undertaking. The feeling of seeing your handiwork admired by your peers and family is beyond compare. And it doesn’t matter what type of craft you are involved in; whether it’s a fondness for carving wood, or a skill for embroidery, or even just a special edge in the art of cooking, we make these crafts not for ourselves. Instead, we craft to impress the people around us.

There are quite a number of craftspeople that are also business-minded. They try to use their skills and talents to make them a few dollars to supplement their income. Quite a few choose to focus their attention on the artwork they’re creating, while others use this skill to earn a few dollars here and there. This is an admirable way of thinking; if selling your wares has crossed your mind, try to push the idea even further.

But do not lose your focus. Remember why you were initially inspired to take up the tools of the trade. After everything is said and done, the bottom line is, we make our crafts to express ourselves. Always keep that in mind, and you will do just fine.

It’s about time that your favorite past time spot you some extra buck. If you have a passion for making things with your hands, then the Nevada crafts shows are definitely a way for you to show the world what you can do. Not only that, you can also earn a bit of money by opening up a booth and sharing the products of your hard work to the world.

So to start earning money now, the first thing that you need to do is research. You wouldn’t want to arrive at the event looking completely clueless. Or worse, you wouldn’t want to not arrive at the event at all. So where do you find easy information about trade fairs and festivals in Nevada? It’s all available in Nevada craft show calendars.

The database contains a detailed calendar which lists all the crafting events happening in Nevada. It’s an excellent tool to start your research. So whether you’re looking for a show near home, or a show next week, the database is there to help you out. It also gives you a heads up about possible fees you might encounter in the events. Now, isn’t that useful?

The most successful events usually start from humble beginnings. While the original planner might have had something bigger in mind, its always a good idea to start with a small event than to force yourself into a large one that will be less organized, if at all. The Potawatomi Festival was small when it was started in 1971, but has since grown into one of the bigger Western Indiana festivals.

The 39th annual festival that will be held during September is no exception. The main activities will be held at the large Ouibache Park along the Wabash River. Here you’ll find flea market booths, food vendors, and craft stalls are placed.

“Everyone will have a blast,” Diana Molden, vice president of the Powatami Festival board, said, “There will of course be other activities for the festival that can be found all around the city, including the downtown area. Sample some of the tastiest festival snacks, have fun haggling for various items sold at the flea market booths, and enjoy the entertainment that we have planned!”

In my previous article, I was talking about the problems of some craftspeople with regards to craft shows. There are those that just not capable of handling the pressure of harsh criticism, or the disappointment that accompanies a bad sales day. If you are one of these people, you’ll probably ask; what now? You could be doomed to simply showing your crafts to your friends when they visit your home. In addition, you will eventually have a home full of your crafts.

The solution that I suggested to people who can’t take the pressures of craft fairs is for them to get a person that will represent his or her work. These people?s job would be to disseminate your wares for a commission, and they?ll also be in charge of talking to people to arrange for your stuff to be sold at craft fairs. This will be the best medium for you if you feel a bit antisocial when it comes to selling your crafts.

It’s not that easy to get into a juried craft show. In some of the larger and most popular ones, thousands apply but only a few hundred are accepted. Still, that does not mean that you shouldn’t get disheartened. If you have belief in your skills, and you hone your craft as often as you can, I have no doubt that you’ll eventually get yourself featured in a juried show. Who knows? Maybe you can even win in your respective category.

However, do not be adamant against joining non-juried shows til then. While they may not draw as much attention as juried shows, all you really need to join is a ready set of crafted pieces and time to call them up and have a booth reserved for you. That’s it! You’re all set for the fair.

But do remember that not all of the non-juried shows are worth going to. Do your research and find feedback regarding the event in the past few years. If you know a fellow craftsperson that says that it’s a bad place to show off your stuff, look into it some more so that you are certain. You’d want to be careful, but you wouldn’t want to pass up some good opportunities either.

Over the years, my wife and I have always enjoyed attending craft shows. There are people who would say that this luck is attributed to the fact that we started early; we were really selling my wife’s handcrafted baskets like hotcakes. But then, I don’t think that’s the reason we stuck with it.

Our luck could only be so much after some time, you see. We did have a thing going on because of my wife’s natural talent for crafts, yes, but I’m not one to brag but I think I picked up on a thing or two, myself. With her natural talent and my consistent perusal of books on the topic, and the hours that we’ve spent making more, we had a decent supply. But that’s not the problem.

You will inevitably come across a situation wherein you will be at odds with your partner. It is hard enough when it’s just about some superficial thing like arranging the booth (as I could never arrange the baskets to her liking), but when things were serious like money matters, then things could become really strained. I remember that I used to have some pretty harsh fights with my wife about this.

Sometimes, the concept of the craft show is confused with the common flea market. It is sad, but there are glaring similarities that explain it. The very fact that we are selling items arranged in an array of booths reinforces that fact. Even though many craftspeople know this fact, however, they are still visibly irritated when their customers treat them as such.

One of the major differences between the common flea market stalls and the craft show booths is the very person who made the item on display is usually the one minding the booth. Because they have invested such a lot of time and effort into their crafted items, you can go so far as to say the piece holds a part of their being. Imagine what an insult it is for them when you try to haggle for a piece of their work.

When you find yourself going around the craft shows, look for quality over quantity. Everyone knows that times are hard, but at the same time, we should be aware that craftspeople are already under pricing their own art. If they lower it more, they will end up with almost no profit from the raw materials that they used.
