The first Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival was on April of 1972 a year after the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Board. The sponsors for the first festival were the Ponchatoula Jaycees and the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce. In which three of its members were made a board member in the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Board.

The first festival was composed of 11 booths at the first block of North 6th Street. The estimated attendees of the first festival were bout 15,000. It was a two day festival that kicked off with a baseball game between Southeastern Louisiana University and Wisconsin State. There was a parade held at the afternoon through Ponchatoula that was joined by 65 units coming from all over the state.

The Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Board vision was to hold a festival where the vendors will only be allowed for non-profit and charitable organizations. For the past 30 years The Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival has been the only fund raising festival. The Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival is also considered as the second largest free festival in the Louisiana celebration, it came second to the Mardi Gras.

The Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival will start on April 3 up to April 5, 2009. For April 3 the festival will open from 4:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., April 4 opens from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. then on April 5 the festival open at 7:00 A.M. and officially closes the festival at 6:00 P.M. The organizers will not allow pets, ice chests, glass bottles, cans, tents, large umbrellas to be brought in the fair grounds.

There will be a lot of activities available for your whole family to enjoy. There are rides like Expo Wheel, Clown Town, Dragon Wagon and many more. There will be live music performance by local and national artists. Of course we must not forget the Annual Strawberry Strut which has been going on for the past 27 years.
