Independent businesses need all the advertising they can get and free advertising is the best kind. Below are five simple and inexpensive (or free) ideas for small business owners to use that will help bring customers to them and keep the customers coming back to the store.

1. Have a “special sale” day that only current customers know about. Ask each customer to give you their email address so that you can send them special announcements about “private” sale days. Then about once a month, send them an email that gives them a 15% discount on anything they buy on a special day. It’s your thank you to your loyal customers.

2. Refer-a-friend promotions work really well. Tell your email list customers that when a new person that they referred buys from you, that they will get 10% off of any one item in the store. Make sure to put a sign in the store about this and have your cashier ask everyone who buys if they were referred by another customer. No matter what the new customer says, tell them abut the refer-a-friend promotion and tell them that all they need to do is give you their email address and they can participate in this and many other promotions.

3. Promote special days, such as March Madness, April Fools, Hot August Nights, etc. On the special days, have cookies, non-alcoholic beverages and have “red tag” sales on selected items. Send an email to your regular customers and have signs in the store promoting the special day.

4. There are online business listing sites, that you can join for free or for very little cost. Google offers a local listings option, many times your local chamber-of-commerce and visitors and convention bureau and your local merchant’s association will have an online list. A website that I’ve found that is quite attractive is www.treasuresof.com. It’s free to join, and it’s more like an “advertorial.”

5. Today, many people are using Twitter to drive traffic to their business. Put signs in your store and tell them about your Twitter sales. Tell them if they follow you on Twitter, sometimes you have a one-hour sale for Twitter users only. Then once a day, put a special Twitter offer. Make sure to put your Twitter name on your website too.

As I mentioned in the above article, there are free resources for you to advertise your business. I recommend you check out www.treasuresof.com to see one of the better ones. There’s no costto register and your business is shown as an appealing, reputable and top-quality enterprise. Click here www.treasuresof.com today.
