There are many different companies who are allowing their employees to work from home so that the business can save money. People who work from home will find it nice to be working at home because they will save money on things like gas for their car and nice clothing and eating out. There will be some initial cost such as office furniture and equipment; however it will be worth it to have a nice, new organized office to begin a job working at home.
People who work in an office atmosphere expect things to be quiet and it is the same with a home office, there should be no kids making noise, no pets or other people interrupting a person who works at home. Even if a person is home all day, it doesn’t mean they are ‘available’ because they are working just as if they went out of the house, only they stayed in.
Setting up a home office at the dinning room table is not the ideal situation. Having a real home office in a spare bedroom would be ideal because they room has a door on it in which the person could close out the sounds from everyday life that could be distracting. Many manufacturers of desks realize that they are making the desks for home offices and create them in a more ‘homey’ style. There are desks that resemble cabinets and when they are opened up, reveal a desk and many layers of shelves for things like a computer, monitor and tower along with drawers for hanging file folders. Some of these cabinets have thick pieces of wood that pull out and are able to hold something like a fax machine or printer.
Office furnishings for a work at home person might also include a large table and chairs in addition to a desk and maybe a small couch or over-stuffed chair. A large table will give an employee who works at home more room to spread out farther with their paperwork than their desk allows or let them build projects that can be left on the table and not disturbed.
An individual who works at home usually needs manuals and books so a nice bookcase or set of bookshelves would be a good idea in their home office. A telecommuting employee may need answers to questions they can’t find online or on the phone so they would need to turn to their manuals and books to help them figure out the solution.
Experts say that a small nap, one of about 15 or 20 minutes is ideal, as a powerful way to rejuvenate and reenergize oneself so having a daybed, small couch or futon in the home office would be a good idea. This would also be a place to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee or a drink to unwind and read materials needed for the work ahead.
Office furniture, like other furniture in a person’s house is a personal choice and needs to suit the person and the job. It would be a wise thing if an individual would invest in some new, good solid furniture for their home office instead of using an old desk and a makeshift filing system or bookshelves. Having new furniture will make the individual feel as if they are working in a real office and their productivity will be higher.
