The Town of Wolfeboro was granted by Governor John Wentworth in 1759. The name Wolfeboro was named after a hero of the Battle of Quebec, General Wolfe. Governor John Wentworth made his mansion in Smith Pond (now Lake Wentworth) and his mansion was made the first resort in the area. That is why the Town of Wolfeboro is considered as the oldest 4 seasons get-away.
In the first few years of The Town of Wolfeboro the community was a farming community. The location of the town was the stage route from Dover to Conway, which gave the opportunity to buy and sell lumber and apple products. The town was even considered or called the Slab City. It was Slab City because of the traffic of limber and wood products going in the town. Over the years the town has grown from agriculture and lumber to selling commercial products like woolen blankets, shoes, clay pipes, excelsior, dairy products, pewter, clothes, etc.
From the time the town was a farming community it has now grown to become the highest per capita income and also being the lowest taxed state in the country. The crime rate of the town is the lowest among other states. It is also the only state in the Northeast area that experiencing a population growth. The tourist will not be disappointed with the untouched nature of Lake Winnipesaukee and the New England character the small town has.
On May 2, 2009 there will be a Spring Fling Craft Fair at the American Legion, Harriman-Hale Post 18 ” Wolfeboro. The craft show will be from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and the vendors can start setting up their booth from 7:00 A.M. until the craft show officially opens. At the special food area breakfast and lunch will be served.
The craft show will have a lot of handmade crafts and arts for sale. This show is an indoor and non-juried event. Even though the craft show is non-juried the promoters are very selective in choosing the vendors. The public will have a free admission to this prestigious craft show.
