In the circle of friends that I have made online, I have one girlfriend that is the lady of Social Media. When the rest of us were hearing about this new thing on the net, she was already fully in place on six of these groups and had started three more for her targeted group. If there is something new online, my girlfriend hears about it first.

My friend Lisa led the pack as this new phenomenon came into being across the internet. She sent out emails telling everyone they must join up. The question most of us asked of her was: why? So she began to explain the facts of this new internet tool to all of us.

Lisa explained that this was the newest thing to come on the scene for marketing online. That instead of emailing people until they were sick of hearing from you, or even worse spamming, that now you were going to make relationships with people. While it may seem like a slower way to do things, that in the long run these relationships would be better as they would be targeted.

Because everyone wants to know if they can trust you before they join your venture, this avenue would allow people to really get to know who you are. Building these relationships would build your business as people get to know who you are and how you conduct yourself in the online environment. This would build the trust factor that is needed for someone to join your online business.

Lisa proved once again that she knew the way to move forward. Trusting her, we followed her into the new realm of these groups and found that new friendships were formed. It takes a little longer, but just as we had followed our friend into these groups, others began to be willing to follow us into our ventures.

It does not matter how many websites you have if no one sees them. This tool of the internet introduces you to other people who might like your product, and they know other people. Everyone likes to share what he or she likes. If they like you and feel they can trust you, they will follow you and bring their friends along.

So what Lisa showed us was to be choosy about which groups we joined, as there were so many popping up everywhere. She explained that quality was better than quantity. You would want to be on three sites and able to build relationships there, than to be on ten sites and not be able to keep up with them. We could see the importance of being careful about which sites we joined. Each group is targeted to a specific area so it is critical to join the one that works with your personal online venture.

Social media is definitely here to stay. As a tool of the online marketer it can be beneficial in promoting his or her venture. Look at the options and locate the site or sites that have similar interests to what you promote. When you have built relationships in that group or groups, they will be interested in what you promote.
