At Kilauea the home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano is where the Volcano Art Center is located. With all the volcanic action this area gets it has becomes so dynamic and powerful, it creates new land form daily. The community in this area derives their tradition and culture with how dynamic and powerful the area is.

The Volcano Art Center was created to promote, develop, and perpetuate the artistic and cultural heritage of Hawaii’s people and environment and this vision is put into life through the activities in the visual, literary, and performing arts. Their members are composed of artists, performers, writers, scientists and educators. VAC presents different variety shows, craft shows and fairs every year to promote their vision and culture.

One of the Volcano Art Center activities for this year is the 12th Annual Spring Dance Contest on March 27, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at Kilauea Military Camp Theater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This dance contest will be the venue for Big Island choreographers and dancers to reveal their new work.

This Dance Contest was created on 1993 in honor of the most influential figure in the Big Island contemporary dance world, Earnest Morgan, a dancer, choreographer, and educator. There will be previous choreographers and dancers as well as new choreographers and dancers that will be joining the contest.

When the contest is done there will be an open dialogue between the choreographers and audience members. This dialogue will give the choreographers a chance to explain to the audience their performance. While for the audience might be able to give new ideas for their next performance.

The admission fee can be purchased ahead of time costing $9.00 but for tickets that will be purchased at the door the cost will be $10.00. The Spring Dance Contest tickets will be available at the Volcano Art Center Gallery, Kilauea General Store, and KMC General Store in Volcano; Keaau Natural Foods in Keaau; and CD Wizard and The Most Irresistible Shop in Hilo.
