Wichita State University is home to the Center for Entrepreneurship. Kansas remains above the national average in percentage of employees in manufacturing and medium and small industries account for the increasing numbers of employees.
Employment growth has averaged just over 3% a year in recent years. According to the 30th Annual Wichita Area Economic Outlook Conference, Wichita’s economy outperformed the national economy in 2008.
Other information released showed that while the nation declined 0.4%, Wichita’s employment rose at 1.9% in 2007. In early 2008, Wichita’s growth expectations suffered as the downturn in the economy began to affect the area. During the first half of 2008, Wichita’s employment showed a decline of 1.2% when compared to the same time period last year.
